  • Can the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW15017 be Mounted on Front Rail of Trailer
  • The Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW15017 actually comes with its own mounting bracket. The problem is that since you secure the winch by threading the bolts through the bottom of the bracket to the bottom of the winch you would have to permanently mount the winch by welding it to your trailer. If you plan on just leaving the winch on your trailer then this is perfectly acceptable as I confirmed this with my contact at Bulldog Winch. If you have a way to customize a bracket on your trailer...

  • Can The DL10970 Hand Winch be Used to Secure the Load to the Trailer
  • The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear winch is designed to only turn when the handle is turned. That being said, it is NOT designed to hold a load on a trailer. If you use the winch to pull a car on a trailer, the car should then be strapped to the trailer before transporting it. I would also disconnect the winch as to not keep tension on the cable when the car may bounce on the trailer as it is transported.

  • How to Power an Electric Trailer Winch from a Tow Vehicle
  • There are a few different ways that you could wire up an electric winch to your truck, even if the winch is mounted on a trailer. I do not recommend wiring it to the trailer connector wiring because winches draw a lot of power and trailer wiring is too small to handle that kind of current. Take a look at the help article I have linked for you. The second half covers methods of wiring up a trailer mounted winch. Option 1: Wiring the Winch with Trailer and Vehicle Winch Wiring Kit, is the...

  • Boat Trailer Winches and Roller Bunks to Ease Loading of Boat on Trailer
  • Most boat trailer winches, whether manual or electric, use standardized mounting. The linked photo of the bottom surface of this Fulton electric winch shows the T-slot mounting scheme. This matches up to a plate such as the Dutton-Lainson Mounting Adapter Plate # DL24055. The winch mount must be capable of handling the full capacity of the winch. For a trailer, you really should have a secure mount such as a steel plate welded to the trailer frame. I suggest you have a look at the linked...

  • Picking Out Winch for 3,100 lb Boat on Trailer with Wood Bunks
  • With wooden bunks on a boat trailer the ratio of winch capacity to boat is right at 2:1 so you could get away with a winch that has around a 1,500 capacity. But a 1,800 lb winch would be easier to winch in and out like the Single-Speed Boat Trailer Winch with 20' Strap - 1,800 lbs # 315-W1800D. This is a very easy to use winch that would work really well for your application.

  • Utility Trailer Winch Mounting Options
  • You would not be able to mount a winch to a wood bed if you are going to put any kind of load on it. You would need to get the winch mounted to the steel frame somehow. To do this you can use U bolts to attach through the wood bed to the trailer frame, if there is steel frame below the bed. Otherwise, you will want to fabricate a mounting location for your trailer. Since you were looking at the Bulldog Trailer Hitch Winch Plate, part # BDW20011, you could purchase a Hitch Receiver tube...

  • Solution for Connecting Trailer Winch to Tow Vehicle Battery
  • I have a solution for you to connect the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW10039 to your vehicle's battery, but it will not work well for you to connect the winch to the vehicle's 7-way connector. The highest gauge wire a 7-Way connector is compatible with is 10 gauge wire. A winch will use either 2 or 3 gauge wire for power. The best way to easily connect the trailer winch # BDW10039 to your vehicle's battery is to use a Winch Wiring Kit. With the winch's 12,000 pound capacity, you will...

  • Where Should a Dutton-Lainson Strong Arm Winch be Installed on a Boat Trailer
  • On a boat trailer, you will need to position the Duton-Lainson winch, # DL25215, so that the loading ring on the bow of your boat is the same height or a little higher than the winch drum when the boat is loaded on the trailer. You will need to us a winch stand or other mounting surface that is strong enough to support a load that actually exceeds the capacity of the winch. The instructions, which I have linked for you, actually cover mounting the winch in the first few pages.

  • Will I Need a Separate Battery to Power My Winch?
  • If you are a frequent user of a medium to heavy duty winch then yes it is a good idea to carry a separate battery with you. Many times we see the auxiliary battery mounted within the engine compartment if there is space available when you have the winch on the front of your vehicle. If you are planning on using your winch when mounted to your trailer then we often see it mounted to the frame of the trailer, but you could also mount a battery box and battery to the bed of your truck. ...

  • How to Reverse the Winch Strap Feed from Top to Bottom on a Worm Gear or Standard Trailer Winch
  • To get the cable to come off of the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, item # DL10974, you would need to crank the winch until the cable is all the way unwound from the winch drum and then continue cranking in the same direction until the cable is wound back onto the drum in the opposite direction it was wound before. This will reverse the feed of the cable from top to bottom or vice versa and will also reverse the direction the handle needs to be turned to winch a load with the winch. If...

  • Can The 7-Way On My Trailer Power The Superwinch LT2000 Electric Utility Winch, # 1220210
  • The Superwinch LT2000 Electric Utility Winch, # 1120210, will need to be wired directly to the battery. You are correct the smaller gauge wire on the 7-Way plug will not be sufficient enough to handle the current of the winch. Two of the wires on the switch will connect to the winch. The other two wires on the switch will connect to the battery. The black wire will go to the negative side of the battery. The red wire will attach to the positive side of the battery using the included circuit...

  • How to Wire an Electric Winch
  • An electric winch is typically powered by either a battery mounted on the trailer or the vehicle batteries. Electric winches will have power leads coming from the winch that will attach to the positive and negative posts on a 12 volt battery (see photo). The leads can be connected directly to a trailer mounted battery or you can use the Trailer and Vehicle Electric Winch Wiring Kit, # BDW20207, to use the vehicle batteries. There are many different options to wire a winch. I have attached...

  • Will the Bulldog Winch Booster Work With A 10K Winch?
  • Since the Bulldog Winch Booster Cable Set - Quick Connect to Clamp # BDW20298 is rated for up to 2,000-amps this'll work just fine with a 10,000-lbs-12,000-lbs winch like the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch - Wireless Remote - Wire Rope # BDW10039. This winch, for instance only puts out 400-amps so you'll have plenty of capability still. As long as you don't go over the 2k amp capacity, you should not encounter any issues.

  • What Gauge Wire is Needed for Trailer Winch
  • For a winch like the Superwinch S6000 Winch # CU854754 you will simply want to use the Trailer and Vehicle Electric Winch Wiring Kit # BDW20207. Since winches can vary on how much they can pull this also affects how much power they need. For a winch that is rated up to 4K it is recommended to use 6 Gauge Wire like what comes in the Bulldog Kit # BDW20304. Anything higher than 4K will need to use higher gauge wire like what is included in the Kit # BDW20207 that I mentioned. If you let...

  • Can the Line on an Electric Winch Come Out at an Angle on a Boat Trailer
  • When using any winch, including an electric winch such as # 2953AT, you will need to have a straight line pull at least 12 inches out from the winch. So in terms of angles it shouldn't really be at any other angle other than level. You would then use pulleys such as # CU881081 to change directions. Having a line pull that is not level puts too much stress on the winch.

  • Can Master Lock Electric Trailer Winch # 2953AT Be Powered from SUVs 12V Accessory Outlet
  • Electric winches such as the Master Lock Electric Trailer Winch # 2953AT can pull significant current when under load. This particular winch draws 20 amps at its rated capacity. An SUV's accessory 12V power outlet cannot deliver the required current to operate a winch at full capacity. These outlets are intended for lower-current-demand items like emergency lights or small air compressors. Optimum winch operation requires a higher-capacity connection directly to a battery, preferably to...
